Life Drawing #43 (detail) (Negative Space Series), Posca and Liquitex markers and masking fluid, A1 (final)

Negative Space

Exploring negative white space with masking fluid, literally ‘taking away’ my marks. A sort of anti-drawing. It’s related to some of my recent quill/ink drawings and Rorschach watercolours where I wash away and erase the marks with water, or introduce drips or auto-destructive practices into the work. I like to weather the marks, distress them, see how far I can go before it falls apart into abstraction.
As I’m using masking fluid in markers, part of the fun is the eventual reveal of the image, rubbing away like a giant scratch-card or secret code picture!

A recent extension of this is using candles to draw blind then build an image over the top with inks and watercolour which shows the original image through wax resist.
