Painting #2 is a lot less chaotic, but based more around Facebook, fake news, Emojis and social media…and Pooh bear! There is a new Winnie the Pooh movie out, so my local Poundland has Pooh bear stencils for kids…how perfect for the bear of little brain! And some really odd emoji stickers meant for kids to apply to their phones…My work has many layers (literally and otherwise) double meanings, I like to play with words, jokes, puns, (not so) hidden meanings.
It wasn’t til I finished that I realised it had become partly about Trump, because purely I didn’t have yellow spray paint but did have luminous orange…fits the whole theme of saccharine emojis that do in fact creep me the fuck out, motivational stickers, +1 gamification/like-farming of creative and less-creative endeavours, the Disneyfication of Pooh (hence the Maus-style silhouettes) and the state of the world at the moment. Play at 45. And some accidental Watchmen influence, I think. Although anything with smileys and drips would probably say ‘Alan Moore knows the score’.
Cute bears, cats, dogs, crying laughing, fuck(ing) pigs that went all the way to the bank and impeachment. Not knowing whether to cry or laugh or do both. In fact given the orange, Impeachment would be a good extra title…I’ve added that.
