Sore and Bolt – Urban watercolours

Beyond the chocolate box! I have an interest in graffiti and ruined, industrial or Victorian municipal buildings (or all three in this case!), as seen by the previous Seething Wells painting. So follows on with ‘⬅ Bolt’ – a painting of the filter beds at Seething Wells above. I’ve also found a ruined lavatory in Richmond which I did a painting of that you can see above and click on below.

Also the abandoned foray into Hanworth wasnt’ a total bust, for as well well as starting the Garrick watercolour, as well as photographs of wrecked underpasses I did this drawing of the side of the A316, the shadows and graffiti fascinated me. I find beauty in the strangest places (not strange for me!) as I think these ‘edgelands‘ deserve as much celebration as a sunset or river or indeed the View from Richmond Hill (more of that shortly). What I love most of all is finding the most ‘ugly’ and not traditionally beautiful in the places where you wouldn’t expect it.

I will do more of these, partly as a reaction to the more traditional river and park pieces I’ve done, I feel after I do one of those I have to go find some junk or rubbish to draw to detox myself from the pastoral and the picturesque! Yeah, I’m an old punk at heart, me.
