Box Hill Visit #1

Over the last Bank Holiday, not being a bank I was hard at work creating. Martin, a local artist I know via the life drawing had the idea to go out on a group trip, and I came along for the ride with Mike and Kate, also local artists and drawers of life (makes them sound like furniture!). Despite the good weather it was rather cold (I don’t think people realise how cold you get even on a ‘warm’ day sitting in the same spot for hours), but I did 2 sketches and a watercolour, in my current ‘loose style’ and decided to leave it as it was rather than add crayon or gouache.

The dip pen study below was rather rushed but again, undecided whether to leave it as a drawing or add watercolour, but given I found out later that I wasn’t using my waterproof ink, I might leave well alone. I usually regret adding things to my drawings anyway.

So a successful trip, I think.

Being a Bank Holiday Monday had groups of kids and parents descending on us to inspect the work, lots of nice comments, very much the focus of attention but nice to have some company in that respect.

I think I’d been to Box Hill before on a rainy walk with John (it nearly always rained on his walks, you could set your barometer by it) but I’d not really clocked how beautiful and varied the place was being all wet and grumpy.

It’s a fairly short bus ride from where I live, so I decided to go back – I’ve been back three times since, and you’ll see the results from this shortly.
