Box Hill #3 – Piano Folly

I mentioned I had seen a poster of a tower on my first visit…well on my third I tracked it down. It’s Broadwood’s Folly or Broadwood’s Tower. Located by Juniper Hall, it was built by Thomas Broadwood (of the John Broadwood & Sons piano family) in 1815 as indeed a garden ornament or folly. Originally it had stairs and you could look out from the roof but these are long gone…but not the original graffiti (really what was with these OG Victorian graff artists carrying chisels everywhere?)

Not shown is the tree which has been removed a few years ago, there was a tree growing inside it for a long time! The stump is still there though.

Before I did this admittedly rather twee watercolour of the tower, I did a loose abstract of the fort on Box Hill – all of which will be revealed in the next post as I actually didn’t finish that til my fourth visit. So you’ll have to make do with my photos of the tower and this watercolour. I like the sky, due to ‘drying issues’ and getting very cold and dark the foliage was a bit rushed.

Also I struggled with the shadows on the tower itself, I got something nice and of course it all got a bit invaded by other colours so had to go.

And to cap it all I just missed the bus and didn’t realise that the bus goes hourly quite early in the evening in that direction. So had a rather cold wait for the next one which nearly coasted by in the dark. Surrey buses eh?
