Double Vision: Home & Bushy Park

Seeing double was the order of the day with these two works. The first “Irises’ above and below is of the imaginatively named ‘Long Water’ in front of Hampton Court was of the ranks of marching trees I’ve been obsessed with for a long time, a Gursky sort of landscape. It’s also a nod to one of my favourite artworks ever, Van Gogh’s Irises. These are yellow rather than blue, but I only noticed after I did the second work the symmetry of the two trees, like a sort of duet or double.

I was also trying out my then new folding chair, which has been a great help – especially in Bushy Park since I don’t want to get more deer ticks! Amazed that people pet or try and feed the deer, or encourage kids to do the same. Do they not know they can be quite vicious (especially now with young fawns) and give them ticks possibly bearing Lyme disease?

Anyway I took some photos in progress, which you can see above and below – I do feel I maybe overdrew the irises but it’s hard not to, since they are very detailed. I was trying to do the opposite though, get their essence in a few lines.

I only really noticed the fact there is a current thing about even symmetry in my work (2 – 4 -Ait anyone?) after I did the second work, Double the next day or so in Bushy Park, which is next to Home Park but has the aforementioned deer, it’s more of a wilder landscape but still basically an Deer Park . “Have you been to an English Deer Park? It’s a large type artist ranch…”

I also took some photos, on my phone so not great quality but I like the fact the crappy camera couldn’t cope with the sunlight so ended up with this hazy halo effect, very much like early photography.

This watercolour is of Heron Pond, sort of middle in Bushy Park, a view of two trees across the water. I was obsessed with the reflections but also the dark shadows and water near me. I heard coots I couldn’t see in the rushes, and thankfully even though I was near the path I wasn’t bothered much.

After this I basically moved a few metres and did another work of a fallen tree…starting a new series. But that’s for another post!
