Ink work in the portrait and life drawing sessions has recently worked the best out of any media – and this session is no different. Rick arrived in his welding gear and after an initial sketch with Stabilo All pencil (making him look rather like John Major!) I tried out the new Pitt pens and some of my refilled pump markers and fine liners. I felt bad that I actually had my watercolour out for most of these but decided to not add colour, so for the final piece did a freehand watercolour, which came out interesting if not exactly a portrait of him.

Of all the pieces though the simplest using my large refillable pump pen (Montana I think) worked best AND actually looked like him. It’s odd how sometimes I get a depiction in one, and other times I sound around the subject until I hit bullseye. It’s why I feel I need far more portrait practice.
