Life drawing #10 – Ash

The last life-drawing session was more painterly – I was experimenting with acrylic and ink brush. I used to love paint-drawing, I don’t know what you call it – paint sketching? Although it can get a bit messy…

Also the usual pen and ink sketch which came out pretty well, and a really nice charcoal which almost became the lead image but I wanted to focus on my painting. One of the best charcoal studies I’ve done so far.

There wasn’t time to mix colours, or be subtle about it in a 20 minute pose! If given more time I’d certainly choose colours that weren’t out of the tube. Although the last one was an attempt at mixing and less ‘in your face’ colours.

More experimentation in drawing, I love this style, where I hold the pencil further away, more like a brush and do broader strokes – works well with harder pencil (I think this was 2H). Less about accuracy, more about expression. Which was this whole session in a nutshell – I decide to have fun with it, and not be hung up about detail after a stressful week, and two weeks away.

The one at the bottom doesn’t belong to this session, not sure if it’s from #9 or #7, but I’d not scanned this as it was in my Skratchbook and across two pages it needed a little digital magic. I love how it breaks out across the page. Again, experimenting with softer pencil work as well – 5B and 6B. Although I have to remember to fix them like the charcoal, this and a few others show signs of rubbing off!
