Return of the Multi-Coloured Posca/Pastel Shop! I had abandoned both of those techniques mostly in recent sessions since they didn’t seem to be working for me, and I wanted to concentrate on line and more mannered and focused mark making. I’d try them, but it would look like a mess and thus those experiments didn’t make it here.
Also did probably my best dip-pen study so far, and amazingly didn’t drop drops of ink all over it and need to use white-out (which goes yellow as I’ve found – grr!) or Lightroom’s spot function on them! The very sculptural 3D charcoal is another good one, also could be a Horror film poster – using compressed charcoal.
BTW I think I got rather mixed up here – this seems to be at least two different sessions combined – the models look different!
But both techniques surprise return at the end of this session, a very strange pose reminiscent of Japanese Horror and some accidental drips in the right places (below)! And before that the manic pastel at the top of the page, which sometimes constantly working totally fails, but sometimes repeatedly going down a wrong path can yield surprising results. Which sounds like a Zen Koan.
Also some more graphite work, and I loved my first sketch of the evening, above which is so abstract and done in less than 5 minutes as they’d already started when I arrived late – using one of my new Staedtler Pigment Liners, I got one with a 0.3-2mm cool chisel tip which means you can do broad and fine strokes with the same pen. I have an assortment of the other widths too, I love them.
This is not really a ‘recommendations’ blog, but it gets 5 stars from me. (Black stars, hand draw and filled in with a pigment liner, obviously).
Also talking of new things, one of the people at the session had found some water soluble wax crayons, which as Cass Arts was having a 20% off sale I got some of those and a couple of Conte pencils…will have fun experimenting with those!
