Dead Tree (Negative Space series), Watercolour and masking fluid, A3

Park Life!

A few bits and bobs, new and old from various parks. First up is a piece I did back in May and didn’t post because I thought it was like a child’s painting. I rediscovered it – in fact when I was using the other side, the fate of works I don’t think are my best…and actually I like the boldness. It was done in the rain, sheltering in the very ritualistic circle of trees in Green Park, in about 45 minutes before I went to meet John at the Royal Academy. A lot better than it deserves to be.

The second piece is an abandoned study I started of some rather strange roots than grow upwards (or are they a plant?) by the pond near the ‘experience centre’ in Bushy Park. I like the reeds, but ran out of time and felt it wasn’t going anywhere and looked…odd. And phallic, Field would have a Freud Day.

The third is the work I went to do after this, a Negative Space series of a dead tree – a first. Also combining some of my ‘wash it away’ techniques, I just threw water on it – hence the splash in the sky – and reworked it…like a lot of my drawing recently, a sort of ‘starting again’ which leads to ghosts of what I did before.

Although I found watercolour mostly just washes away, unlike ink! It’s a very trippy image, really helped by the drawing with the masking fluid.

Experimenting currently with Pebeo drawing fluid mostly cos it’s cheaper so we’ll see if it’s as good as the Molotow. It’s less visible/blue which has it’s upside and downsides (You can leave bits on, the Molotow can leave a ‘Blue Ghost’ sometimes – but harder to see where you’ve drawn…).
