Life Drawing #54 – Nick

Nick was a wonderful model, I hope we have him again, very friendly – and most important, wonderful poses. Another good session for drawing – something I don’t do enough of, especially in pencil or charcoal or graphite. Some very good 5 minute drawings especially the reddish brown one on the left, using my favourite, Derwent XL blocks. And I think a good pencil piece using the Stabilo All pencil which actually looks like the model! I really do need to order more of these. They are very soft and go very quickly like the Woody pencils, but they deliver an amazing black and as I’ve said before, spread in really interesting ways when wet.

The Dark Series continues…with a nice and rather anatomical drainting or pawing – it’s not really drawing but it’s not really painting on the black gesso / wallpaper liner combo. I learned from this one to always paint to the edges, I like the rough edge feel, it’s part of the work BUT I am crap at framing/positioning things on the page. Absolutely terrible, I try and size things up and it quite often ends up lopsided (thank goodness for crop!) – so I need as much space as possible, as seen by the head being too close to the edge. So after this you’ll notice no more ‘edgy’ backgrounds.

Also some nice ink pieces like the one below with ink and brush. Drips ahoy, but I love me some drips…
