I have been doing a lot of the night work series recently, for various reasons – mostly because it’s warmer and it’s quieter at night, so safer. Sometimes recently I’ve been heading out as late as 9 or 10pm….here are two recent watercolours from the river at night. The first ‘Night Moves/Moods’ is looking towards Kingston Bridge, quite late so you can see the lights. This is a return to the wet-on-wet style I have been using before, this time with ink.
The second is an almost spiritual moody piece of the moon over the disused filter beds near me, very late at night. There was a bird in shadow on the thin walkways, which posed there for hours until I saw the shadow of a fox skulking along. Luckily the bird got away!
Technically the gloaming halo of the moon was the thing that took longest, I had to add the moon later because it was too wet at the time, the white ink kept spreading.
