Landing Lights And Perfumed Gardens

Another development is the return of the free watercolour – look Ma, no lines! No ink! I am aware that sometimes my work is a little bit like those old ‘colouring in’ books from my childhood which are now all the rage again…draw ink lines…fill in the bits….don’t rinse, repeat. So nice to do some wet on wet and free work. Best time of year for it to be honest, the very wet watercolour…winter is the worst. Watercolour takes ages to dry and you freeze while waiting for it to be safe enough to carry…

The first piece doesn’t totally feel like Night Work pieces but the gloaming before the sunset? Although the poplar piece ‘The Perfumed Garden of the Night’ is definitely night time but feels sunnier, oddly.

Also I think this highlights the problem with Instagram – ‘Perfumed Garden’ I think suffered from Small Screen Syndrome, you don’t see the detail on a phone. It doesn’t let itself for that kind of detail. Whereas you can zoom in here by clicking on them! I like the random nature of the spread especially in the bottom right corner.

The second piece with the jokey title is something I planned to paint for a long time, since I photographed this for my Promenade photo blog. I’d see the light left on the Turk’s landing as I stumbled home from a club (remember those?!) in the early morning light, and think ‘I must paint that’. And then when I went to do so…they switched their light off!

Finally one midnight in late May/early June I managed to catch it…not totally sure it works with the dark river, t was hard to capture that deep murk, but I love the glow of the light, using Cadmium Orange as a glaze. Took me ages though….but keep that thought for later night work!
