Love was in the air at Portraits At The Pub last week with a Valentine’s Day edition with Charlie who I’ve drawn before with his girlfriend Maria. I was experimenting with the new sketchbooks as detailed in my last post and included a rapid fire sketch with the paint sticks. First up was the profile pose above – I’m good a profiles so that went well, in the new Flat White book. I wish I’d learn about tops of heads though, I always struggle with those!
The sketches below were all intending to be watercolour but ran out of time, and shown in detail because of course I screwed up other parts of it, it takes a lot longer to draw two people – and a higher risk of getting one or both of them wrong! So the next one I did the watercolour above, on the A3 Canson pad just to make it really difficult….I think because the other sketchbooks were drying at that point!
The final piece wasn’t scheduled but we had time for a short last pose and so I did this in 7 minutes on the A3 pad. This is when all my experience at life drawing doing a 5 minute sketch comes into play. Not sure it totally reads as a kiss, but I like the abstract nature. It’s not exactly Rodin’s Kiss but I like it. Maybe I should try more quick abstract sketches like this?
