Mason is a Kingston University first year art student and he posed for us last week at Portraits At The Pub. He had a cyber/goth/alternative look going on, and with the lit candle and balloons (!) it was a mix of Interview With A Vampire, Mad Max and Top of the Pops circa 1984! Certainly had a sort of birthday party vibe, hence the title of one of the pieces – and a reference to the band also 😉
Firstly we have the ink and watercolour pieces, the one on the right was the first and then the, balloon one below then the watercolour – I think the balloon one almost tells a story of someone alone on their birthday. Proud of that drawing, it’s a good representation and has an interesting mood. Can you tell I was obsessed by the balloons? And the sunglasses and the fabric – anything reflective, shiny or folds of fabric is something I get obsessively attracted to drawing or painting.
As you can tell, the overload of folds in the shirt became a problem, because I wanted to draw those and nothing else….but there simply wasn’t time.
And then as is traditional we have the tempera paint stick pieces – a 5 minute piece at the end, and the larger piece for 25 minutes. I actually was going to abandon the featured piece becauase I was initially not happy with the drawing of the face, and do several pieces in that time. I’m glad I kept with it….it looks a bit like MacKenzie Crook?
