Portraits At The Pub 34: Pip

Back to the Portraits At The Pub before the heatwave, and the woman of many looks, Pip, daughter of one of the group Naomi, posed for us. Again the paint stick versions felt more successful, but some good fountain pen pieces, a large woody pencil piece – I am getting back into using woody pencils again – and a surprise pen piece of Adam from the Lamb.

Pip was wearing a lace dress with almost cobweb designs on it, so that was fun to draw, you can see that in the second fountain pen drawing which was unusually light /high key for me. I really must work on my anatomy especially proportion of arms..I think a trip back to Life Class is in order!

There something very heroic about the first of the paint stick pieces – I labelled it the Russian poster piece, it is very socialist realist in my mind. I got the arms on the woody pencil piece so wrong, you only get the top detail (it was a 4-5 minute bonus piece after the paint stick one)….and the surprise stealth pen piece of Adam.

But I like the large paint stick piece the best, it’s the face and hair, and I like how I’ve just demarcated the arm with bright pink and yellow, it’s bold but works…and the sgraffito there. Colour combinations can be a bit random with the paint sticks, but sometimes they work out a harmony, and this is evident here.
