Less happy with this portraits session unlike previous ones, not sure why. I like the woody pencil piece, and the abstract parts of this paint stick – the knees and chair specifically, but I do feel the parallel pen piece didn’t work – looks like she’s terrified…and the other paint stick piece is rather wonky. There is something heroic about the pose in the first paint stick piece though – and indeed silver backgrounds are still working!
I’ve recently pulled out my old parallel pens and started using them again, I always keep my old mediums and then rotate them to keep myself interested – I can’t afford to keep buying new things, so like an old toy I need to forget about it then discover it anew. ‘Shopping your stash’ is what it’s called in fountain pen circles.
Mood-wise I think the woody pencil piece works the best, with the cushions and the expression, it feels quite wistful and mysterious – even maybe Pre-Raphaelite? I had a lot of trouble with those arms, it’s a problem with the woody pencils is when they go down and get in a wash, that’s pretty permanent, even white woody pencil won’t really go over it. I might try ink next time…
I am hopefully soon off on my holidays – well a working holiday, Jaunt #3 in a few days, I’ve been busy preparing everything to the micro level cos I don’t want to be let down like last time!
I am planning to post more while I am away talking about what I am doing and how it’s going. I am going to use it like a diary – so short bits talking about a piece or how the day went, because one of the problems of the previous Jaunts was remembering what happened and when.
