Portraits At The Pub 49: Rick

I’ve been off with Jaunt 4 and then recovering from same, I forgot to post the portrait session I did just before I left – actually the night before. Rick was posing for us in an ALL GOOD sweatshirt, and as always I was as obsessed about the fabrics and clothes as the model. Not as good a session as some, but was trying out my Faber Castell pad before I took it.

Sadly my favourite Fabriano Mixed Media pad was mostly finished, so I didn’t take it, but I didn’t use the FC pad that much, It actually turned out I didn’t really need two pads – next time I will only take one. But which is going to be hard to decide. I did a paintstick piece with the new gel sticks, and a few technical pen drawings.

The run through was cos I’d never used the Faber Castell pad, I’d say it’s good, on a level with Artway’s Flat White but not as good as the Fabriano Mixed Media, it’s a good mixed media paper, able to take ink, although it still suffers from the same weird initial resistance to watercolour that I saw on the Artway, like it sorts of beads up first, then is fine. Sizing?

Fabriano does not do this, acts a little more like watercolour paper.
