A few more sketches from my favourite and most available model! First is a portrait test of some cheap black to white shading pastels from The Works (Boldmere). They are pretty good – I’m of the opinion you can’t skimp on paint but you can do so with most pastels. I was trying to get the white of the beard – which is easier in colour. Also it was quite a hard angle, not a profile, slightly from above…
Next is a sequel to the B. Diptych, partly accidentally as I did it on my small pad and felt I had run out of space, so started again on the other page.
The same time as the pastel sketch, I did a sketch in pigment liner while John was reading a book. He thought he was keeping still, when in fact he was moving all the time – so both of these are composites, a lot of moving my head to get the previous angle!
And the last is a doodle caricature I did when I first got my Conte Pencils – the first thing I did in fact! And on the bag I got them in, which means this turns out to be a sort of advert for DaVinci. Which given I don’t use their products, and they are not paying me is kind of odd…
