Sometimes a session is made by a great model – usually someone who is a professional. Boyko was one of these, both older, bearded and male – all of which tends to be rare in these sessions sadly. Not sure what the rope/string was about (he’s a bit young to be a goatherd with his slingshot?) but some very dynamic poses.
Rather than starting with some failed Markal drawings as is traditional, I got out my Black to White pastels which I’ve not used in ages and thankfully brought that day on a whim. I borrowed some chalk I did some larger drawings. I might even have used charcoal, not sure.
I was struggling to capture him, looking back I didn’t do a bad job, but the pressure is on with such a great model, I get a bit flustered.
Particularly good was the quill and ink drawings – both towards the top. This was only the second time I had used a quill in the session, I actually had found a feather in Bushy Park, looked it up online and made my own. Which is good because the one I used the week before had gone missing! So these are the first DIY Quill drawings, I had no idea how it would work…it went like a dream. The granulation works particularly well with the model.
Also another in the Rorschach series – he had this very biblical ‘why me Lord?’ pose, on his knees and arms outstretched. It was very old school Academy…
Also I did a pigment liner drawing of that ‘why me Lord?’ pose. Annoyingly I got some of the proportions wrong so it’s shown here in detail, but I think the head is a good quick sketch of him. As is the quill ink sketch repeated below so you can click on it – that is almost a cartoon sketch but it’s a good likeness.
I hope we have him again as a model!
