A new session and new a technique – this time experimenting with masking pens and fluid. Almost a printing technique, using the masking fluid which dries really quickly as an initial drawing layer of detail or highlights, then laying over India Ink with the quill or watercolour to get a more loose/expressive feel without losing that original drawing.
It’s a lot of scratching/rubbing to remove after though, like some gigantic artistic scratch card! Surprised it works really well with paper with a tooth – so sugar paper and watercolour paper is fine. Not so easy to get off smooth paper, like the A2 cartridge pad above.
This session was very much about drawing as I also did some nice charcoal studies, concentrating on the face since I want to specialise in portraiture eventually, and her back. my favourites have to be the featured watercolour which is a combination of my Rorschach technique with drawing, or the two sitting poses which look like etchings. Also the granulation of the india ink – literally it seems like the ink just flakes into particles if spread into water – really does suit skin tones.
